Table That Idea - Part 1
01/16/08
This weeks visit to Wendy’s turned up something new - advertising ON the tables. I’m not talking about sitting on top of the table, I’m talking about affixed to the table.
Observe:

To me, it seems a little much. I mean, these are the things that they put on the floor in supermarket aisles. I don’t want them on my table.
I’m sure they are just testing, but Wendy’s (and any business the relies on repeat customers for that matter) needs to be careful not to ruin the experience. They should be trying to improve my visit, not using odd ad placement that detracts from it.
Don’t get me wrong, I love unique advertising. These decal things are a GREAT idea for supermarkets. I just think that there’s a line. Just because a space is open - doesn’t mean that an ad should be inserted. And, just because you have a captive audience, doesn’t necessarily mean you have market to them.
(Wait, there’s more. Read Part 2 here)

Hey Dave:
Thanks for drawing attention to this practice. I think they had that in place last time I went to Wendy’s too, and I can tell you for certain that this particular Wendy’s could have invested the money more strategically in better training in food handling and customer service.
Would you be willing to elaborate on the difference, in your mind, between ads on the table in a restaurant and ads on the floor of a supermarket? What makes one surface appropriate and the other unappropriate?
